The Existing House is a bold response to the challenges of densification and intensification of uses on an existing suburban site. Rather than tabula rasa or adding new buildings on the surrounding land, we chose to amplify the existing.

The three apartments in this plot intensification are organized to create a collective space on the ground floor, in continuity with the road network and, in the apartments, according to the natural light and views towards the great landscape. Like a graft, what already exists is organically and incrementally modified and augmented.

The enhancement of existing assets is accompanied by sustainable redevelopment. The choice of materials for the additions is in keeping with the local context, making extensive use of local spruce. Reuse is favored for existing technical installations and structural elements.

This project provides a concrete response to the issue of densification and enhancement of a commonplace 20th century architecture. It turns it towards new uses, new forms of community and mobility, while respecting its local material history.
